Golfers Elbow and Arm: Pain and Inflammation in the Elbow

The elbow is an important part of the body that allows for complex movements like stretching and contracting the arm, lifting objects and more. Resilient muscles and tendons run along the elbow joint through to the wrist.

When stressed, they act as flexors in both joints and facilitate the transfer of power along the entire arm. Overstretching of these muscles and tendons can lead to small injuries (known as micro-traumas). In mild cases, these can be resolved with treatment and can often go unnoticed.

However, repeated strain or wear and tear of the muscles and tendons can lead to the accumulation of these microtraumas and lead to significant pain and inflammation in the elbow. Patients suffering from this condition are diagnosed with a “Golfer’s elbow/arm” (medically referred to as Epicondylitis Humeri Ulnaris)

Causes of Golfers Elbow and Arm

Contrary to common belief, the condition isn’t exclusive to the sports domain. Golfer’s arm is a disease of the elbow joint and the muscles in it. Some of the well-known factors that can lead to developing a Golfer’s arm include:

Repeated overstretching or over-stressing of the elbow joint. This is much more common in manual labor jobs with repetitive movements like bricklayers, fencers and painters.

Repeated stress or injury caused by sporting activities. Most typically found in athletes who are often holding a forced posture due to the nature of their sport. For example, martial arts, cricket, golf and recently e-sports athletes are commonly affected.

Trauma in the elbow due to an accident.

Untreated minor injuries that lead to long term build-up of micro-traumas in the elbow can lead to chronic golfer’s elbow.

Golfers Elbow and Arm Symptoms

The symptoms of golfer’s arm vary depending on the progression of the condition. Some of the more common symptoms include:

Pain on the inside of the elbow, initially occurring only during strenuous activities.

This pain is often momentary at first and usually subsides quickly. However, it is an indication of an underlying issue and should not be ignored.

Under consistent stress, the symptoms tend to get progressively worse.

After progressing further, the affected muscles become very sensitive to pressure and feel warm.

Inflammation begins and there is a tightening in the arm.

Stiffness in the joint with any movement causing pain and rigidity.

In chronic cases of degeneration, the entire joint can become affected. This leads to constant sharp pain.

The mobility of the joint is severely impacted and becomes stiff, and it is common for the pain to radiate in the upper and forearm.

A prompt diagnosis is highly recommended to avoid developing chronic symptoms. Early diagnosis is the best chance at a full recovery.

Diagnosis of Golfers Elbow and Arm

A medical professional (a GP or Physio) begins with complete patient history and physical examination of the elbow.

This provides critical information about the risk factors to the patient as well as allows for a study of the progression of the condition.

Sophisticated imaging technology like X-Rays and MRI scans can be used to get more information about the condition of the bones, muscles and tendons in the joint.

Treatment for Golfers Elbow and Arm

Treatment for golfer’s elbow/arm is mostly conservative, i.e. non-surgical. Protecting the affected tissue region and fighting inflammation are the most important aspects of an effective treatment plan. A recommended guideline would include:

Immobilization of the Joint

It is highly recommended that the joint be relieved of all stress and be allowed to heal. Providing sufficient support and rest to the arm can itself prove to be highly effective in complete prognosis.

Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy And Occupational Therapy

Regulated physical therapy helps with targeted muscle training and is a proven effective treatment path. The physiotherapy exercises can help promote reorganization of the muscles and are the most effective option to curb the disease, and best discussed with your treatment specialist.

Regular targeted exercises can help maintain the mobility and effective functioning of the joint and is highly recommended.

Prescribed Painkillers

Painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Panadol can in some cases be used to help alleviate pain and discomfort in patients. Pain, however, is a crucial indicator of the injury. Painkillers merely mask the pain without addressing the underlying condition.

Long term use of painkillers has side-effects and can be counter-productive. These should only be used when directed by a doctor, and not for any extended periods.

Anti-Inflammation Steps

Managing inflammation is crucial to take the pressure off the arm and allow for healing. There are several measures a patient can take, to seek relief from inflammation. Some of them include:

Anti-Inflammatory medication only if prescribed by a medical practitioner.

Electrotherapy, especially iontophoresis (the application of anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving ointments under the skin using direct current).

Ultrasound Therapy

Local injections of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. For example, NSAIDs have both analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Injections of Botox into the muscles to reduce the strain on the muscles.

The application of cold blankets or cryotherapy with short-term ice packs or cold air is often effective.

Elbow Brace And Strap

Elbow orthoses can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life. They help to reduce the pain and discomfort patients experience by taking pressure off the joint and soothing the inflamed tendons.

Wearing a Bauerfeind elbow brace like the Sports Elbow Strap or the EpiTrain helps to minimize the chances of injury by providing enhanced stability, proprioception and medical-grade compression.

This is not found in simple neoprene sleeves and braces and can be instrumental in a speedy recovery. Often protecting the elbow is enough for a complete recovery, and bracing is one of the most effective measures towards that goal.

Golfers Arm – Medical Braces & Straps

Medical braces like the Sports Elbow Strap and the EpiTrain aim to reduce the stress on the muscle at the base of the joint and helps reduce pain. The medical-grade compression helps breakdown edema (inflammatory swelling) and takes the pressure off the nerves and blood vessels in the region. The brace supports the arm in everyday movement and can lead to a significant improvement in the quality of life.

The EpiTrain Elbow Brace reduces stress on the joint and applies medical-grade compression. This promotes the breakdown of edema (inflammatory swelling) and is very comfortable for all-day use. The intertwined silicon pads provide a massaging effect to alleviate the pain without limiting mobility.

The brace supports the arm in everyday movement and can lead to a significant improvement in the quality of life.

Tennis Elbow: Repeated Strain and Tear of the Muscles & Tendons

The elbow is an important part of the body that allows for complex movements like stretching and contracting the arm, lifting objects and more. Resilient muscles and tendons run along the elbow joint through to the wrist.

When stressed, they act as flexors in both joints and facilitate the transfer of power along the entire arm. In mild cases, these strains can be resolved with treatment and often go unnoticed.

However, repeated strain or wear and tear of the muscles and tendons can lead to pain and inflammation on the outside of the elbow. Patients suffering from this condition are diagnosed with “Tennis Elbow”.

Causes of Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow usually affects the tendon attachments of the muscles running along with the hand to the elbow. These tendons are responsible for movement in the wrist and fingers. Some of the more common risk factors that can impact these tendons and lead to such an injury include:

Prolonged overloading of the exterior muscles (outer elbow) in the arm. This is typical for people doing manual labor and construction jobs (eg: carpenters, bricklayers, concreters) which involve regular heavy lifting.

Daily repeated use of heavy tools during work also adds immense stress on the tendons.

Repeated movements over long periods of time, typical in day jobs like the prolonged use of computers.

Repeated movement of the arm in sporting activities, usually racket sports, like tennis, squash and badminton.

Accidental trauma and injury can often lead to damage, developing painful symptoms.

Tennis Elbow Symptoms

Symptoms of the condition are mild in the initial stages but tend to get progressively worse. The disease is degenerative and can have significant long term risks. Some of the most commonly known symptoms to look out for include:

Localized pain on the outside of the elbow. Especially noticeable when stretching or moving the wrist and fingers. This pain in the initial stages arises under stress on the tendons and subsides when the activity is halted and the muscles are at rest.

Inflammation and redness of the arm are common. With progressing inflammation, it is common for the patient to experience stiffness and sensitivity in the affected limb.

As the disease progresses the pain and discomfort become more persistent. A patient will start to have difficulty with the most basic of movements. There is rigidity and pain in trying to move the middle finger in particular.

This severely impacts the mobility of the arm and has a debilitating impact on the patient’s quality of life and ability to perform simple tasks with their hands.

In chronic cases, the entire joint is compromised and the patient experiences sharp lasting pain that can radiate to the upper arm.

It is in the patient’s best interest to seek immediate medical attention to prevent the pain from progressing into the chronic stage. Early diagnosis is the best chance at preventing further issues and getting a full recovery.

Diagnosis of Tennis Elbow

A medical professional (usually a GP or Physiotherapist) begins with complete patient history and thorough physical examination of the elbow. This provides critical information about the risk factors to the patient as well as allowing for a study of the progression of the condition.

Sophisticated imaging technology like X-Rays and ultrasound scans can be used to get more information about the condition of the bones, muscles and tendons in the joint.

Treatment for Tennis Elbow

The treatment for Tennis elbow is mostly conservative. Surgery is almost never required as an option. The primary focus is to relieve symptoms of pain and discomfort and tackle the serious problem of inflammation.

Lifestyle Change

Strenuous activities should immediately be halted to prevent any risk to the elbow. The arm needs sufficient time to heal and avoiding high-intensity work or a sporting activity can be instrumental in relieving the joint. Alternating arms for certain activities can help here.

Physiotherapy and Tennis Elbow Exercises

Complete immobilization is not necessary, in fact, it is highly advisable to seek regular physiotherapy. Consistent physiotherapy helps with targeted muscle training and is a proven effective treatment path.

The physiotherapy exercises can help promote the reorganization of the muscles and are the most effective option to curb the disease. Exercises can help maintain the mobility and effective functioning of the joint and are best continued even after the symptoms have gone away.

Prescribed Painkillers

Painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Panadol can be used to help alleviate pain and discomfort in patients, only when prescribed by a medical professional. Pain, however, is a crucial indicator of the injury.

Painkillers merely mask the pain without addressing the underlying condition. Long term use of painkillers can have many negative side-effects and can be counter-productive.

Anti-Inflammation Steps

Managing inflammation is crucial to take the pressure off the arm and allow for healing. This should only be pursued when directed by a medical professional. There are several measures a patient can take to seek relief from inflammation. Some of them include:

Anti-Inflammatory medication as prescribed by a medical practitioner.

TENS currents, a pain-relieving stimulation current treatment is often effective. It can be safely carried out in a patient’s home and is very convenient.

Ultrasound Therapy

The application of cold blankets or cryotherapy with short-term ice packs or cold air is often effective.

Elbow Brace and Support

Elbow supports can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life. It helps reduce the pain and discomfort patients experience by relieving the joint, allowing them to continue in their normal activities.

Wearing a Bauerfeind elbow brace like the EpiTrain or EpiPoint can minimize your chances of injury by providing enhanced stability and healthy proprioception. With regular use of a strap, patients can transition to physiotherapy faster.

Surgical Intervention

Only in rare cases when conservative methods have failed, and the disease has progressed into an advanced or chronic case does surgery become an option. Patients have two major surgical options including:

Tenotomy: where the surgeon makes an incision along the tendon to reduce load and overstretching of the tendons.

Denervation: where the surgeon clears out the nerve network in the affected region, numbing the area and providing relief from pain.

Surgery brings with it many risks, and should only be considered as a last resort.

Tennis Elbow Braces & Supports

Medical braces like the EpiTrain and EpiPoint aim to reduce the stress on the muscle at the base of the joint and help reduce pain. They are often instrumental in the primary stage of treatment to shield and support the elbow by targeting the tendons that are affected by Golfer’s Elbow and Tennis Elbow.

The brace reduces stress on the joint with targeted massage pads. This soothes the tendons and reduces pain.

Golfer’s Elbow: Medial Epicondylitis

The elbow joint is a complex structure made of two bony thickenings called the epicondyles, and a complex network of muscles and tendons.

Together these allow for stretching, bending and rotating the forearm, wrist and elbow. When the muscles on the inner side of the elbow are inflamed or damaged, a patient suffers from the condition Golfer’s elbow.

In mild cases, micro-traumas appear on the elbow that can lead to inflammation and pain. Conservative treatment is often effective in treating mild cases.

However, the condition can get progressively worse. Chronic cases of Golfer’s elbow can mean intense pain and discomfort for a patient and the mobility of the elbow joint is severely restricted.

Causes of Golfer’s Elbow

Golfer’s elbow is typically a disease of overstretching the muscles and tendons or over-stressing the elbow joint.

Some of the most commonly known factors leading to the development of this condition include:

Repeated intense stress on the elbow joint due to lifting heavy loads or screw movement (rotation) of the joint, most commonly found in manual and construction laborers.

Performing repeated tasks in bad and unhealthy proprioception.

Repeated movement of the elbow joint over long periods of time can lead to gradual wear and tear of the joint. Commonly found in people with long hours at a desk or a computer.

Frequent intense jerky movements on the hand and forearm, common in athletes of different sports. For example, the repeated swinging of clubs in golf, from where the disease gets its name.

Accidental trauma or injury can lead to microtraumas in the joint.

Golfer’s Elbow Symptoms

The symptoms of golfer’s elbow heavily depend on the progression of the condition. Some of the most commonly associated symptoms include:

Pain on the inside of the elbow, initially occurring only during strenuous activities. The pain is momentary and usually subsides quickly. However, it is an indication of an underlying issue and should not be ignored.

Under consistent stress, the symptoms tend to get progressively worse. Pain and discomfort tend to return as soon as the activity is resumed.

A patient experiences more intense pain and it lasts longer. The affected muscles become very sensitive to pressure and feel warm. A patient might develop redness and palpable swelling in the elbow.

In chronic cases of degeneration, the entire joint can become affected. The patient experiences constant sharp pain. The mobility of the joint is severely impacted, and it is common for the pain to radiate in the upper and forearm.

A prompt quick diagnosis is highly recommended to avoid developing chronic symptoms. Early diagnosis is the best prognosis and a full recovery is possible.

Diagnosing Golfer’s Elbow

A medical professional begins with complete patient history and complete physical examination of the elbow. This provides critical information about the risk factors to the patient as well as allows for a study of the progression of the condition.

Sophisticated imaging technology like X-Rays and MRI scans can be used to get more information about the condition of the bones, muscles and tendons in the joint.

Treatment for Golfer’s Elbow

The treatment for golfer’s elbow is mostly conservative.

Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy

Contrary to belief, complete immobilization is not necessary; in fact, it is highly advisable to seek regulated physiotherapy. Regulated occupational therapy helps with targeted muscle training and is a proven effective treatment path.

The physiotherapy exercises can help promote the reorganization of the muscles and are the most effective option to curb the disease. Exercises can help maintain the mobility and effective functioning of the joint.

Prescribed Painkillers

Painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Panadol can be used to help alleviate pain and discomfort in patients. Pain, however, is a crucial indicator of the injury. Painkillers merely mask the pain without addressing the underlying condition. Long term use of painkillers has side-effects and can be counter-productive.

Anti-Inflammation Steps

Managing inflammation is crucial to take the pressure off the arm and allow for healing.

Manual treatments of the inflamed muscle by physiotherapists, for example, cross friction, according to Cyriax.

Injections of Botox into the muscles to reduce the strain on the muscles.

The application of cold blankets or cryotherapy with short-term ice packs or cold air is often effective.

Medical Golfer’s Elbow Brace

Elbow brace can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life. It helps reduce the pain and discomfort patients experience by relieving the joint.

Wearing a Bauerfeind elbow brace like the EpiPoint can minimize the chances of injury by providing enhanced stability and healthy proprioception. With regular use of a brace, patients can transition to physiotherapy faster.

Golfer’s Elbow Braces & Straps

Medical braces like the EpiTrain and the EpiPoint aim to reduce the stress on the muscle at the base of the joint and helps reduce pain. They can be instrumental in the primary stage of treatment to shield and support the elbow.

The EpiTrain brace reduces stress on the joint and applies medical-grade compression. This promotes the breakdown of edema (inflammatory swelling) and is very comfortable for all-day use. The intertwined silicon pads provide a soft massaging effect to alleviate the pain without limiting mobility.

The brace supports the arm in everyday movement and can lead to a significant improvement in the quality of life.
